The Black Art by: Anne Sexton
Sexton uses an "I" statement in the poem "The Black Art" to establish that she was the speaker of this poem not just the writer. In this poem she writes about a girl who is virtually only an emotional thing, a man who is to big for his britches, and their relationship together. This plays on the gender roles of society where the women cooks the food and the man builds with his tools. In the third stanza Anne writes about how herself and the man of the poem were very disconnected with everything even their belongings, this stanza also emulates the dissatisfaction between the two. Openly writing about her relationship with this man is what makes it a Confessional poem beyond the "I" statement/first person point of view, the relationship is personal which was often the theme of poems under the Confessional poetry title.
